‘Gallus Gallus’

Commissioned by Utah County for the Draper Library, 1136 East Pioneer Road, Draper, Utah

In reference to the City of Draper's early industry of poultry and sheep this playful series of work includes three oversize hens and a rooster each perched on a Victorian roost (approximately 5’), 22 chicks, and thirty eggs. The Victorian roosts represent the sheep industry, which financed the early Victorian architecture of Draper.

The three hens each represent a different fancy breed of chicken. Represented are the Cochin, Buttercup and Polish. The hens are each placed outside of a window of the children's section, creating an engaging view which affirms a creative and playful environment.

The Rooster is modeled after an Old English Game Cock and the Red Jungle Fowl (gallus gallus- progenitor of all chicken breeds). The rooster stands outside the Library entrance majestically looking over the grounds, just as a rooster would watch over his familiar “yard". His regal acceptance of library visitors shows they are welcome.

Within the library are three groups of sculptures depicting chicks and eggs. On the fireplace mantle is a row of 12 eggs and a chick, and on the opposite side of the fireplace upon another mantle are 12 chicks and an egg. Just inside the library entrance is a tower of twelve Emu eggs topped by a curious chick.
